We have had 30 chicks hatch so far. Might have a few more, incubator holds 42. All that have hatched are doing great. Hubby was kind enough to buy me chicks water and feeder. The upright type as I already had the lay down type. But since we are putting chicks into a plastic tote upright works better.

These chicks are for sale on a local level. I also am selling hens from last year hatch that I do not need in my breeding program. I will Not ship either hens or chicks. But if you are with in driving distance you can contact me either here or facebook or email me threw farm website http://www.bluemoonvalley.com/ We also have the farm page on facebook as Blue Moon Valley Farm https://www.facebook.com/pages/Blue-Moon-Valley-Farm/447088522062904 you can reach me there also.

Speaking of facebook. We have a number of groups for East Tn on there related to farm stuff. So make sure to look for them as we have one now for selling goats in East TN and farm barter and farm livestock. Just getting the word out there. Hope everyone spring is going well.

We have been busy here when hubby comes in from over the road driving. Deck is done and stairs for deck are almost done. Still have railing to do but we did get it all stained. Now we are planing how to make it chicken proof, as we do not want chickens going up to new deck and do what chickens do best POOP.

Last night I moved the rest of the pullets from this years hatching over to big coop. Last week we butcher 3 cockerals for puppy food. New pup comes in on the 24. I am doing puppy testing for whole litter for the breeder. It will be nice to have a dog again. Hubby needs a play mate to rough house with when home.

We have 3 more cockerals to do. They are still in smaller coop. Hubby plans on doing them next week but time will tell since we have so much else happening like new pup coming in and front porch to do yet. He is also wanting me to hatch out over 50 next year. Hmm will need a bigger coop for that if I do.

We have lost 3 of the 6 last hatched out. 1 male 2 girls. that leaves 2 males 1 girl not good. New hen that I got over in NC went into moult but she did lay a few eggs here before that happened. Unfortunatly those that I thought might have been hers were taken. She should be coming back into lay soon, so I will be watching. The new pullets from this years hatch are about to lay soon too. So we shall have lots of eggs again. I only have had one hen laying. She never went broody and is more of the leghorn type body not the Plymouth Rock type body. Next year will be getting rid of her as well as one from the early hatch this year.

Even though we only have 3 adult hens the pullets of this year were from many others that did not make it. When I did that hatch we had over 10 hens breeding. But have since been hit by feral dogs and fox and hawk. Last one was neighbors great pyrness that got loose and ate one of my hens. That dog should be put down for a LGD to eat stock is not a good dog. They do not need it as the have no stock and it stays tied to a tree. We have reported them but dog laws here are very easy. Oh well next year gate will be closed if we get fence done this winter.

Well, today is a great day. My broody that raised the chicks I hatched this spring is now hatching her own. I had forgoteen when she went broody. Just too much going on. I knew she was close and due to one of the pullets making hen noises I decided to look out back. Well, more fed the chickens out back. I saw her outside of coop and light bilb lit. Hmm wonder if her eggs hatched. So down I went to the coop and on my way there she was walking around inside which is not normal. She has been sitting real tight on the nest and I never distrebed her. (sorry for spelling I am real tired) I saw 4 chicks when I got down there. Later that afternoon I went down to check on her. Oww she is being real protective. Eggs were still hatching. I have no idea how many she is sitting on or how long hatch will go for since I think the other hens layed a few after she started. I know my bad but I was not over worried about it since it was late in season and it just ment extra for us.

Wed we will be moving spring chicks to big coop and mom and chicks to small coop. That should be lots of fun. We have high weeds to cut down to even open the door front of small coop. We let it grow up a bit for sun protection. Not looking forward to that work. Now need to buy new camera and video camera.

Where is the rain and Lots of chicks. April 17, 2012

Hubby got grassed mowed. It just took him two weeks. Lots of repairs on the mower. It is an old John Deer that is geer driven. We can not use the newer ones due to the slop of the property. Have to say it looks great now. Now we just need rain and I bet now that I said that we will get too much. LOL

We lost one of the hens the other day. So that leaves me with 6 and the 3 roosters. One hen is brooder but I doubt her eggs will hatch for one of the roosters keeps getting her out of the nest box. That is OK since I have alot of chicks hatched now. This last batch is almost done and most hatched. Now I have a problem. Not big enough space inside. I will be moving this buch outside this week to the small coop since temps are good here now. I will see if broody will take some after tomorrow. I will be getting the 4 in there out so she can be moved in with chicks. That will slove that problem for now.

What this has shown me is I need to get better set up. So I am looking into pro incubator and brooder now. I like what Dickey has for a cabinet incubator and have heard good things about it. The brooder I am still looking into too but I think I might have found one I like. I would be much happier getting this whole thing outside in a building but we do not have electrcity going to another building yet. That is in the works. Hopefully later this year we will have coop expanded and another built just for chicks and hatching. That is the plan anyways. Just do not know when right now as other stuff just came up.

As far as the hatching this is the largest of the 3. I have at least one more to do as most of this one is sold also. Last one will be only for us. I hope I will not need more than that last one to stock us up.
